What is Genius Hour?
Genius Hour is a year-long project inspired by Google's business practice of allowing employees 20% of their time to pursue interest-based projects. GMail is a product of this practice. Many schools, including the 8th Grade Language Arts teachers at Mills park have taken this idea and applied it to their classrooms. The idea has many names -- Genius Hour, Passion Projects, 20% Time.
We started Genius Hour at Mills Park during the 2014-2015 school year. Each 8th grader participates in the project, and the 8th grade holds a family showcase at the end of the school year for students to share their work. The videos and links on this page provide the process of Genius Hour, the reasoning for Genius Hour, and example projects. |
