ReadingLearners can expect to read a variety of texts over the course of the year. Reading standards are split into two categories --Reading Informational Text and Reading Literature. We not only look at what a text says but also how a text is structured, why an author makes the choices he/she does in a piece of writing, and what connections a text has to other works.

WritingLearners can expect to write for a variety of purposes and audiences over the course of the year. Argument writing is a focus of 8th grade Language Arts as well as narrative writing and informative writing. In addition to these writing styles,learners can expect to reflect through writing for a range of assignments in class.

Speaking & ListeningSpeaking and Listening skills play a major role in 8th grade Language Arts. This section of the standards require learners to foster communication skills through collaborative work, judging and evaluating the effectiveness and reliability of information that is presented to them, and presenting sound, polished work that integrates technology.

LanguageLearners can expect to practice and refine their grammar skills as well as their vocabulary in 8th grade Langauge Arts. Standards require students to explain the function of verbals, understand active and passive voice, and recognize verb forms. In addition to grammar studies, students are aked to expand their vocabulary through the study of roots and through learning new words in context. The language standards also focus on the understanding of figurative language in context.
